I know at one time I was able to upgrade lights with the upgrade recipes,
because with sroath i went from an orb, to a shard, and finally to a lamp. 
It seems this has been removed for some reason.  I'm trying to figure out if
that's intentional or not.  Given it's a pain in the balls to find lights of
any form in grandmaster/king, and orbs are the lowest form, which seems to
be the only kind you're likely to find...  I'd dearly like to be able to
upgrade my lights again.
